Area of Appointment: Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) is collecting applications for a Multicultural Specialist. This full-time position will be responsible for direct clinical service (individual and couples counseling, group psychotherapy, drop‐in and crisis intervention) as well as outreach, with a particular focus on serving students of color. Depending on the needs of the center, as well as the expertise and interest of the successful hire, the position may entail clinical supervision of practicum students or postgraduate residents.

Professional Duties: General duties will include provision of time‐limited individual and couples therapy, group therapy, intake assessments, crisis intervention, outreach, and consultation. This position will particularly focus on establishing collaborative roles with our Cultural Centers of Academic Excellence and helping CAPS to effectively serve our students of color. Depending on the needs of the center, and qualifications of the successful hire, the position may also include clinical supervision of practicum and/or postgraduate residents. It is expected that the person who is hired into this role will work collaboratively and productively with colleagues.

Rank and Salary:    Appointment will be made within the Student Services Professional‐Academic Related classification and will be an academic year (9 month) position. This is a non-tenure track faculty position.

Professional Qualifications:

Required qualifications:

      • A master’s or doctorate degree in the field of clinical or counseling psychology, applied (clinical) social work, or closely related field.
      • Previous work experience that included therapy with a diverse teen or adult population.
      • California license-eligible (as a Psychologist, LMFT, LCSW, LPCC) within 1 year of appointment.
      • A well-grounded understanding of, and skillset to address, issues facing students of color (particularly African American/Black, Latinx, Native American and Asian/Pacific Islander students), including issues of marginalization, social inequities, prejudice, and discrimination.
      • Training and experience in psychotherapy with diverse, including traditionally underserved, populations is particularly important-- including initial assessment, treatment planning, individual and group therapy, and crisis intervention.
      • Must have interest, experience, and specialized competence in understanding the unique needs of traditionally underrepresented populations, particularly Black/African-American, Latinx, Native American and Asian/Pacific Islander communities.
      • The successful candidate must also be able to establish strong working relationships with our Cultural Centers of Academic Excellence and organize and lead events/educational programs outside of CAPS (sometimes beyond the normal 8-5 work day).
      • The candidate should have strong written and oral communication skills and be a good team player.
      • Ability to keep up with the fast pace of the center and maintain timely case documentation.
      • Applicants that are not yet licensed must be able to achieve licensure within 2 years of hire.

Preferred qualifications:

      • California licensure in a mental health field.
      • Completion of an internship, postdoctoral residency, or other relevant post-degree work in a university counseling center.
      • Experience in outreach and demonstrated success in engaging and working with underserved and/or marginalized groups.
      • Interest and experience providing clinical supervision (e.g., to practicum therapists, interns and postgraduate residents).
      • Ability to work collaboratively across disciplines and groups (e.g., with medical staff, Dean of Students office, community partners, etc.).
      • Ability to operate from a strength-based perspective and incorporate a solution focused framework in the therapeutic work.
      • Bilingual (fluency in Spanish).
      • If not yet licensed, completion of required supervised clinical hours (for licensure) is preferred.

General Information:  

Humboldt State University is one of the smaller campuses of the 23-campus California State University system, with about 8,200 students.  Founded in 1913, HSU is a residential and rural campus located in Arcata, California.  HSU is known for its open and friendly campus environment and has a national reputation for academic excellence, especially in the sciences. Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) is housed on the 2nd floor of the Health & Counseling building on campus. The facility includes 13 clinician offices, a reception area and waiting room, a group room, a professional library, a conference room, and a staff kitchen. CAPS consists of eight licensed therapists, and several postgraduate residents and practicum trainees, working as a team. Peer consultation is emphasized and constantly utilized in a supportive and collegial atmosphere. The staff is especially interested in clinicians who will support this type of work environment. Most of our professional staff members are involved in supervising trainees.
