Alejandro Torres, AMFT (he/him/his)

Staff Psychotherapist; LatinX Focus

Biography:

I arrived in Humboldt in 2014 with the goal of becoming a therapist. I pursued this goal by graduating from College of the Redwoods, Humboldt State University, and Cal Poly Humboldt, earning my master’s degree in counseling psychology in 2022. I am now practicing as an Associate Marriage and Family Therapist.

As a queer person of color, moving to Humboldt was a unique and challenging experience considering I had grown up in cities that were much more culturally diverse. Living in Humboldt can feel isolating for anyone, but when you are LGBTQ+ and/or BIPOC, the issue is exacerbated. In my journey of becoming a therapist, I recognized the need of more LGBTQ+ and BIPOC therapists in the area. This further motivated me to become part of the much-needed representation. My identity and approach as a clinician has been shaped by my college education, professional experience, and lived experience.

Areas of Interest:

I primarily use a person-centered approach to help build a therapeutic relationship in which people feel safe to share openly and honestly. I aim to provide person-centered care by meeting clients where they are at and helping them with whatever issue they bring through the door. I also like to incorporate elements of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy to help people identify their values and consider how they can pursue a life more aligned with those values. I also take a special interest in providing harm reduction, LGBTQ+ affirming, and culturally competent care.

Personal Interests:

I enjoy exploring the beauty of Humboldt by going to the beach, forest, and river. Some of my favorite physical activities include hiking, backpacking, and swimming. I like to unwind by listening to music, watching tv, and playing video games.
